Lagos State Government’s Life Skills Economic Empowerment Program, which recently graduated over 500 beneficiaries, is a strong example of the state’s proactive approach to skill acquisition and economic empowerment. The program covered a range of critical skills such as fashion design, digital marketing, web development, cosmetology, culinary arts, and entrepreneurship. These are modern, relevant skills that align with the demands of the global economy and are essential for youth employment in the 21st century. Lagos’s government has also introduced numerous projects aimed at improving the city’s youth capabilities, including ICT training, business incubation, and affordable housing schemes for entrepreneurs, making it one of the more progressive states in terms of economic development.
Comparing this to Northern Nigeria, while the region has also seen initiatives aimed at skill development, there is still a gap in terms of program accessibility and modern skills training. Northern Nigeria has often focused on agricultural skill training, sewing, and basic crafts, which, though valuable, are not as aligned with the rapid technological shifts in the global workforce. For instance, while programs like empowerment initiatives through the National Directorate of Employment (NDE) have been active in the north, the emphasis on digital skills, like coding, digital marketing, or graphic design, has lagged behind. As a result, many young people in the north may not have the same access to tech-driven empowerment programs as their southern counterparts.

Future Expectations
Lagos State has launched several forward-looking programs designed to empower its residents and foster economic independence. One notable initiative is the Lagos State Youth Empowerment Programme, which is focused on providing young Lagosians with vocational skills in industries such as construction, fashion, hairdressing, and digital sectors like software engineering and cybersecurity and. This initiative will run throughout 2024, offering 4-12 week courses to both students and entrepreneurs, helping to address unemployment and equip participants with skills relevant to the global digital economy.
The state’s continued emphasis on skill acquisition and economic empowerment is evident in various programs, such as the Lagos State Micro-Enterprise Support Initiative (MESI), which has already benefited thousands of residents by providing tools for different trades, from sewing machines to barbing clippers.
