SEUN KUTI ALBUM “Heavier Yet” COMING SOON

What To Expect

Seun Kuti & Egypt 80’s upcoming album, Heavier Yet (Lays The Crownless Head), is set to be released on October 4, 2024. This album, which follows six years after his Grammy-nominated Black Times, is expected to deliver a powerful blend of Afrobeat rhythms and socially charged messages. The project is executive produced by music legend Lenny Kravitz, who has maintained a close collaborative relationship with Seun, lending a unique sonic quality to the album. The album features six tracks, each reflecting Seun’s commitment to activism, resistance, and cultural pride. Standout singles include “Dey,” featuring Damian Marley, which celebrates identity, and “Emi Aluta,” a tribute to revolutionaries. Notably, Seun Kuti continues to follow in the political footsteps of his father, Fela Kuti, using his music as a platform for change and empowerment.

The Last Breakthrough

Seun Kuti’s last album, Black Times, released in 2018, was highly acclaimed for its blend of Afrobeat rhythms and politically charged themes. The album earned Seun his first Grammy nomination in the Best World Music Album category, solidifying his place as a global music force. Black Times received positive reviews from critics who praised Seun for staying true to his father’s legacy while carving his own path. Black Times resonated with global movements advocating for political and social change, particularly in Africa. Songs like “Last Revolutionary” and “Corporate Public Control Department (CPCD)” challenged neoliberal exploitation and called for African self-reliance, which struck a chord with activists and audiences worldwide. The album also became an anthem during the #EndSARS protests in Nigeria, symbolizing resistance against police brutality and government oppression. On streaming platforms, Black Times performed well, especially in Africa and Europe, though its reach extended globally due to Seun’s growing fanbase and international performances with his band, Egypt 80.

Like Father Like Son

Seun Kuti’s music career is deeply intertwined with activism, but it comes with its share of challenges. While his politically charged music, inspired by his father Fela Kuti, addresses issues like police brutality and corruption, it has also attracted the attention of the Nigerian government, raising concerns about potential backlash and censorship. His outspoken nature, particularly in movements like *#EndSARS*, has led to increased scrutiny and even threats to his safety, as reported by.

However, Seun also faces the weight of his father’s legacy, which can be both a blessing and a burden. While his music has critical acclaim, it doesn’t always receive commercial success on the same level as mainstream artists, which may threaten his financial stability in an industry driven by chart-topping hits. His niche activism-oriented approach sets him apart but also limits his mass appeal.

Cultural pushback is also a recurring issue, particularly from conservative elements in Nigerian society who view his songs as divisive. His messages, which challenge traditional norms, have not always been well received, especially in the northern parts of Nigeria. This cultural resistance could potentially hinder his ability to gain widespread support. Despite these hurdles, Seun remains steadfast in his mission, using his platform to promote societal change, although the threats to his career and safety persist.
